Across Scotland we help children coping with very difficult circumstances. Children suffering from abuse or neglect, or forced to care for parents with alcohol or drug problems.

Children like Keira (10)

Keira's home life was not easy. Her mum and dad both suffered from mental health problems, which had led to the family becoming very isolated.

Keira's schooling was affected by her family situation. She complained of being bullied and felt she had no friends her own age. She was worried about leaving her mum on her own, feeling it was her responsibility to take care of her.

When she first came to our Young Carers Project, Keira was a fearful, shy girl. However, with the help of her worker, she used art materials to explore her worries about her mum's health, friendships and her shyness.

As time passed, Keira slowly gained in confidence and was able to acknowledge some of the positive things in her life. She realised she had people who cared about her and that she was good at reading, art and football. As she became more confident and happy, her attendance at school improved dramatically.

Children like Keira are often quiet and uncomplaining. But that doesn't mean they aren't crying out for help. Please support us to give children like Keira the attention and comfort they desperately need.
