Protecting children and young people

Protecting children takes all of us! Children depend on the adults around them to listen, support and take action to keep them safe. We believe that protecting Scotland's children cannot be left to professionals – it takes every one of us in Scotland, including you!

However we know that sometimes it can be difficult to know what to do when you have a concern about a child. We campaign to help every adult take action if they are worried about a child’s welfare or safety. Take a look at these Ten Top Tips to help you to do what you can to protect children.

We also want the Scottish child protection system to be centred around what works best for children, including valuing the place of confidential space for children and young people to talk about abuse.

And we are looking for your support to help prioritise preventing violence against children and young people. This means adequate support for parents of young children, taking bullying seriously, and reducing violence and alcohol misuse within families in Scotland.

We call for:

  1. Engagement of the public in taking action whenever they have a concern about a child that they see, or know - see Ten Top Tips
  2. Prioritise preventing violence against children and young people
  3. Statutory agencies involved in child protection to work in partnership with the public to protect children, including giving feedback to concerned individuals
  4. Confidential space for children and young people valued as a core part of protecting children - Report: Confidentiality: will you keep it to yourself?
  5. Preventing all bullying of children and young people, and taking action wherever it occurs - Policy Briefing: Bullying
