Cooper Park

The Cooper Park project based in Elgin provides help to children, young people and their families throughout the Moray Council area who have been affected by abuse. Staff provide direct therapeutic work such as individual counselling, group or family work. The new service is linked to the well established CHILDREN 1ST abuse recovery service at Killen Family Resource Centre in the Black Isle.

Tom (15) was referred for counselling as a result of his inappropriate sexualised behaviour. Tom had been sexually abused by his father from the ages of 8 to 12. His father's betrayal had left Tom feeling that he had no control over his life. His confidence and self-esteem were extremely low.

Counselling helped Tom accept that the childhood abuse was not his fault nor something that he had control over.

Looking at his past and linking it to his present behaviour helped him to realise that his abuse had left him unable to relate to other people except in a sexualised manner.

Resolving these issues meant that he could, over time, take responsibility for his behaviour and move forward.

I don't think that I would have got through this without someone to talk to. I couldn't speak to Mum as she was so upset.
