Callum was only eight when he was referred to the service. He had been sexually abused and neglected at home. His parents were long-term drug users, his father had recently died and his mum was unable to care for him. He lived currently with his aunt and uncle.
He was experiencing difficulties in school and in his community and was worried about who would care for him. This was subject to a court process.
Callum was extremely quiet and would not speak about what had happened to him. Using play therapy, his worker was able to gradually build up a relationship with the little boy and to help him begin to express his feelings through play.
Over the course of a year, his worker helped Callum to make some sense of his experiences.
His aunt and uncle said that Callum was more settled at home and was able to open up to them which meant that they were able to support him more. Callum now lives permanently with them.
