Directions Project, Ayr
The Directions Project, Ayr supports children aged 7-12 years and their families in the South Ayrshire area. Staff help children address difficulties, including challenging behaviour, possible or actual offending behaviour, and help them to stay with their family, in their school and community.
A key part of helping children involves working with their parents on issues such as parenting skills and helping them access services and activities in their community.

When Sam (11) came to the Project, he was offending in the community, at risk of exclusion from school and family relationships were at breaking point owing to his behaviour.
Sam, his mum and her partner needed support in managing and understanding his behaviour.
Sam worked with a project worker on a weekly basis, sometimes twice per week, addressing issues within the school, home and his community. This included the project worker providing support in the school environment, and setting targets for Sam to reach with regards to his behaviour. His mother and her partner played a major role in emphasising the importance of the Project's input, and worked with us in helping Sam use alternative coping strategies.
His mother also actively participates in the Parenting Group and sees herself as being a more outgoing and confident person as a result. At present Sam is involved in an Anger Management Programme with other young people. He is also managing his time in school more positively. He is on a part time timetable with support from his school and other educational resources.
Since being referred to the Project, Sam has not offended, he spends time with his peers, which he had been unable to do previously, and he has more confidence in himself, and in his abilities to manage his behaviour.
