Directions Project, Glasgow
The Directions Project, Glasgow supports children aged 7-12 years and their families in the Glasgow City area. Staff help children address difficulties, including challenging behaviour, possible or actual offending behaviour, and help them to stay with their family, in their school and community.
A key part of helping children involves working with their parents on issues such as parenting skills and helping them access services and activities in their community.

Robert (10) was referred to the Project by the local social work department. Robert was putting himself and others at risk owing to his challenging behaviour in the home, school and community. He had also been excluded from school on several occasions.
Robert participated in a six-week assessment programme, during which a project worker was allocated to the family. The programme included activities such as cooking, mask-making and compiling a family tree. The purpose of these activities was to establish James's social skills, his numeracy and literacy skills, boundaries, and coping skills.
From the assessment process a programme of work was established to help Robert begin to look at his feelings, the consequences of his actions and the impact of his behaviour on people within his home, school and community.
Robert is now undertaking a six-week groupwork programme with four other children. The programme is aimed at looking at ways to help children examine their feelings of anger and how they can appropriately manage those feelings. Robert has been able to show enthusiasm and has interacted well with the other group members, an activity he has not been able to sustain in the past.
