The Family Support Team
The Family Support Team, based in south east Edinburgh, works with vulnerable children in the 0-12 age range and their families. In collaboration with the City of Edinburgh Council, the team works with primary school aged children who are in danger of exclusion from their schools, homes or communities. This may involve individual, family or group work, focusing particularly on social skills. The team also provides a service to the parents of very young children, aged 0-3, both through intensive family work or groupwork support.

Paul, aged 8, was getting into trouble at school and his teachers were concerned about him. He was often late, couldn't concentrate in class and picked fights in the playground. We visited Paul's mum and dad and found out that his mum's parents had recently died and this had hit her very hard and was causing rows in the family. His mum and dad had never been able to agree on family rules and routines. This caused further rows.
We met weekly with Paul's mum and dad, helping them to agree ways of managing their children's behaviour. We also gave Paul extra help in the classroom, especially at maths time. His difficulties in maths had knocked his confidence and made him anxious. Paul visited the project every week, taking part in arts and crafts activities to boost his confidence and to help him manage in class. Paul is now enjoying school and his parents and teachers have noticed a huge improvement.
