Fife Abuse Recovery Project

The Fife Abuse Recovery Project is one of the first CHILDREN 1ST abuse recovery services to be located within a health care setting. Staff work within a multi-disciplinary team alongside clinical psychologists, a forensic psychologist and nurse therapists to provide a service for children and young people who have experienced sexual, physical or emotional abuse. This project has been jointly funded by CHILDREN 1ST and Fife Primary Care Health Trust.

Kath (15) had only recently disclosed that she had been raped when she was 13. Kath cuts her arms and abuses alcohol and drugs. Her father left home when she was little. She lives with her mother and her partner. The family has moved home many times and Kath has had to tolerate a lot of changes and losses in her life. When Kath first came to the Service she described herself as very angry. Her abuser was never convicted owing to lack of evidence and she often felt not believed and failed by the social work and legal systems.

We found ways of helping her talk about her experiences and address the effects they were having on her life. She used the sessions to get angry, play like a child and test boundaries and trust issues. Although so much of Kath's life seemed chaotic she always made it to her sessions. The progress Kath has made is clear. She reduced the cutting of her arms, she has formed good relationships with her peers, considers her safety when she takes drugs and alcohol. When Kath first came to therapy she was unable to accept any compliments about herself. Now she can accept that she's an intelligent and creative young woman who has a future ahead of her.

I was sad when I first came along and now I am a lot happier.
