The Killen Family Resource Centre

The Killen Family Resource Centre in the Black Isle, Ross-shire, provides a therapeutic service for children and young people to help them recover from the effects of childhood abuse and neglect. At Killen, we provide individual counselling and family support and help families protect their children from further abuse. We also work with adults who have been abused as children, where this is affecting their ability as parents.

Five year old James was sexually abused by his mother's partner. In the lead-up to the partner's conviction, James and his mum were supported and counselled by our outreach worker. Support continued afterwards. James understandably was having difficulty coping with these terrible experiences. He was deeply hurt and very angry.

Over the next 10 months James visited Killen for individual counselling. Through art and play he was able to express his feelings of anger and betrayal. Thanks to excellent support from his family, social worker and CHILDREN 1ST staff, James continues to make good progress. He has learned to trust men again. Nothing can remove what has happened to James, but we can help him to recover and to reclaim his childhood.

Killen is a lifeline for people like my son and me. It gives a great sense of stability when your whole world has been shattered.
