Monster Swim
A legendary challenge...
Nessie is letting us share her home for one day only! Take a dip into Loch Ness and be part of this year’s Monster Swim.
The Monster Swim 2012 promises to be a day to remember. On the southern side of Loch Ness, at Dores beach, fearless swimmers will don their wetsuits and swim either the one mile 'Big Yin' or the half mile 'Wee Nessie'.
Get involved and tell your friends that you swam wild with the Loch Ness Monster in the UK’s largest freshwater lake. The stuff of legends!
Is there a minimum age for participation?
Yes. Participants must be 16 or over for the Big Yin, or 14 or over for the Wee Nessie.
Will I need to wear a wetsuit?
Yes, almost certainly. This is because the water temperature in Loch Ness in August can range between 10-15°C. If you don’t have your own wetsuit you can hire one for the day. More details about wetsuit hire to follow.
To qualify for the Monster Swim non-wetsuit category, you will need to attend a qualification swim at 5pm, Friday 17 August 2012 where your abilities will be evaluated by the organisers.
Please note: If you are in any doubt of your tolerance levels, then we would suggest that you arrange to bring a wetsuit along to ensure that you can take part in the swim on the day.
Will I need to train for the swim?
Yes. You can find detailed guidance for preparing yourself for the swim here.
How will CHILDREN 1ST support me?
Join Team CHILDREN 1ST and we will provide you with full support and top tips to get your fundraising started. We'll help you on your way as you prepare for the challenge and we'll be there on the day to cheer you on from the banks of Loch Ness and make sure you get warmed up quickly once you reach dry land.
In addition, the event organisers will provide you with full details about how to prepare for the swim and what to expect on the day.
How do I register for a charity place?
By agreeing to fundraise for CHILDREN 1ST, you can receive a charity place for the Monster Swim, which means you won't have to pay the entry fee. To reserve your charity place today, contact the Events Team on 0131 319 8068 or at events@children1st.org.uk.
How much sponsorship do I have to raise for a charity place?
For the 1 mile swim, we ask that you raise a minimum of £200 and for the half mile, we ask you to raise at least £150. Every penny you raise helps us to build a brighter future for Scotland’s vulnerable children and families.
What if I want to buy my own place?
If you can't commit to a fundraising target but would like to raise something for CHILDREN 1ST you can register online now for your own place. Once your place is secured, contact us by phone on 0131 319 8068 or by email at events@children1st.org.uk. We'll then provide you with everything you need to get started with fundraising for your challenge.
How much does it cost to buy my own place?
Own place entry fees are £35 for the Big Yin (1 mile) and £25 for the Wee Nessie (half mile).
