Donating shares is not a new idea but in April 2000 the Chancellor made it more attractive to individuals with the introduction of a new tax incentive. You are entitled to claim back full tax relief equal to the market value of the shares on the day you make the gift, together with any associated costs such as brokers' fees. Furthermore, capital gains tax on any increase in the value of shares since you bought them will not apply.
