Speaking up for kinship carers
Wednesday 10 December 2008
CHILDREN 1ST has called on MSPs to back calls for better support for kinship carers.
As MSPs debate kinship care in Parliament, CHILDREN 1ST has written to each MSP to highlight the value of this family-based care. We have also emphasised that these kinship carers need better financial and practical support, and that it is time for the UK Government to introduce a new non-means-tested welfare benefit for kinship carers.
Kinship carers are family and close friends who care for a child full-time when they can no longer live with their parent(s). Often these carers are left bearing the full costs of bringing up a child, even though many of them are already retired or living in poverty.

Carers can contact ParentLine Scotland 0808 800 2222, the free national helpline for parents and carers, about any concerns that they have.
