People's Postcode Lottery a Winner for CHILDREN 1ST
Friday 27 February 2009
CHILDREN 1ST and the People's Postcode Lottery have celebrated our special relationship with a charity gala at the Scottish Parliament.
Attended by Lottery ambassador, Carol Smillie, the event marked the People's Postcode Lottery's first year of existence in Scotland.
Since it was set up, the lottery has provided a total of more than £1million to CHILDREN 1ST and its other chosen charities Maggie's Cancer Care Centres and the Scottish Wildlife Trust.
The event was attended by MSPs and charity representatives who spoke glowingly about the support the People's Postcode Lottery has provided for Scottish charities.
Last year the People's Postcode Lottery raised £387,161 for CHILDREN 1ST
The three charities receive 20% of all money raised from monthly ticket sales, and last year the People's Postcode Lottery raised £387,161 for CHILDREN 1ST.
Across Scotland, we match more than a hundred volunteer befrienders with struggling children and young people who are experiencing difficulties at home, at school or in their communities. Their befriender provides friendship, support and the opportunity for the child to develop their self confidence and broaden their horizons by trying new activities.
Said Anne Houston: "The People's Postcode Lottery has made a real difference to the support CHILDREN 1ST is able to provide to vulnerable and isolated children here in Scotland.
The children and families we work with are often already at the sharp end of poverty, and the current economic climate is likely to exacerbate the problems and stresses they are experiencing. Thanks to the continued support of the People's Postcode Lottery however we will be able to make a real and lasting difference to their lives."
How it works
The People's Postcode Lottery is subscription-based and players purchase a £2 ticket based on their postcode. Every week one lucky postcode wins the £25,000 Street Prize, shared between all winning tickets in that postcode. A further £5,000 is split between ticket holders in the winning Postcode Sector. And three times a year the People's Postcode Lottery gives a massive ‘Postcode Belter' prize pot of £250,000 minimum to a lucky postcode.
Every ticket is also entered the monthly Postcode Belter. Held at the end of every month, the Postcode Belter is a pot of money which increases in line with the growth of the Lottery - players can win thousands of pounds and a brand new Mini.
