125 young people show they have something to say

Monday 5 October 2009

The 125 Event

2009 is the 125th anniversary of CHILDREN 1ST (previously the Royal Scottish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children).  To mark this significant year, CHILDREN 1ST held a unique event in Edinburgh on 23 September, to bring together 125 young people who will act as champions for the promotion of children’s rights in their local area.  Invited delegates, including MSPs, had the opportunity to hear first hand from the young people about their hopes and concerns for their future.

Young people at the event worked in groups to discuss some of the issues facing young people in Scotland today. They worked on four topics which they then presented to the invited audience.

Those topics were:

  • History and impact
  • Image
  • Rights
  • Violence

All of the groups spent some of their time discussing the ‘Future’ – both for CHILDREN 1ST and for children and young people themselves.

You can view photos from the day on our Flickr pages here.

Prior to the 125 event, a group of young people took part in an intensive week of media training and have been busy putting together resources for the event using CHILDREN 1ST archive material and carrying out interviews with politicians, newspaper editors and children’s champions. This material is available to view on our You Tube channel here.

All of the participants are now working in their local communities and presenting their ideas at school, youth groups and to their local media.
