Supporting grandparents

Wednesday 10 February 2010

Supporting grandparentsLooking after small children can be hard work...especially when you're 67.

"I love my grandchildren but I never thought I would be running around after them at my age."

Anna is looking after her two grandsons, Daniel aged 6 and Jamie aged 4. She called our ParentLine Scotland helpline where, for the first time, she was able to talk openly about what was going on in her family. Her son and his girlfriend are both alcoholics and Anna had become increasingly worried about the welfare of her grandsons so she took them to live with her.

The boys’ father wants to take them back but Anna thinks this is not safe. Our helpline volunteer gave Anna a chance to talk about her worries and provided her with practical advice. Anna is now going to contact the social work department to find out how she can make sure her grandsons stay where they are safe.

Supporting grandparents is an important part of our work because for many children their grandparents provide a place of safety. Every child needs someone in their life who will always be in their corner, who will do everything in their power to protect them – for many children that is their granny and grandad.

Please help CHILDREN 1ST so we can continue to help grandparents like Anna keep her grandchildren safe and secure. You can make a donation here.
