Statement on confidentiality
Monday 22 February 2010
Statement on caller confidentiality:
Anne Houston, Chief Executive of CHILDREN 1ST, said: "Helpline services rely upon members of the public placing their trust in us and having confidence that their information will not be shared. We would therefore like to express our disappointment over the actions of the National Bullying Helpline. The breach of confidentiality and the inappropriate manner in which this has been handled is unacceptable.
CHILDREN 1ST run three helplines in Scotland (ChildLine, ParentLine and Bluebell) and all calls are completely confidential unless we believe a child is in danger or serious harm. All callers are informed of this before any conversation takes place.
We hope that the actions of one charity do not damage public opinion regarding helplines in general as they provide a valuable service to thousands of people each year."
