PVG Scheme is up and running
Wednesday 30 March 2011
The Scottish Government’s new Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme has now gone live – hopefully making lengthy form filling a thing of the past for sports staff and volunteers.
The PVG Scheme is designed to ensure that people who have a known history of harmful or abusive behaviour are not put in positions of trust with children or vulnerable people. In addition relevant information is continually updated on Scheme members and anyone who becomes unsuitable can be quickly identified and removed.
Anyone in ‘regulated work with children’ will be asked to join the PVG Scheme. A briefing paper for sports groups on the new legislation has been produced by Safeguarding in Sport, a partnership between CHILDREN 1ST and sportscotland. It can be downloaded free here.
The PVG Scheme is currently only be available to those who are joining the PVG Scheme workforce for the first time, moving posts or whose circumstances have changed. It will take about four years to phase all of the workforce onto the scheme so there will be plenty time to get to grips with how it will operate.
In the meantime, as well as keeping up-to-date with progress, activities and events by visiting the websites below, Safeguarding in Sport recommend you ensure that appropriate safe recruitment, child and/or adult protection policies and procedures are in place.
Disclosure Scotland have already highlighted a number of common errors appearing on the new forms – to ensure quicker processing keep up-to-date with these here. This page is the ‘interface’ on the PVG Scheme, with all news regularly updated.
