People's Postcode Lottery raises £150,000

Tuesday 29 July 2008

Peoples postcode lottery logoThe People's Postcode Lottery has certainly proved a winner for CHILDREN 1ST. Our partnership with Scotland's new lottery saw us receive £150,000 thanks to the support of members of the public.

The charity lottery, which was launched in January 2008, donates 20% of all money raised from monthly ticket sales to CHILDREN 1ST, the Scottish Wildlife Trust and Maggie's Cancer Caring Centre.

Changing the lives of some of Scotland's most vulnerable and disadvantaged children can take a great deal of time and money. The donation from the People's Postcode Lottery will fund our young carers' service for a year; allowing us to support children and young people who look after sick or ill parents, or care for younger siblings due to their parents' drug or alcohol mis-use.

"Stopping a bad childhood from lasting a lifetime"

Anne Houston, chief executive of CHILDREN 1ST, said; "Many children born in Scotland have the odds stacked against them. Their families may be struggling with poverty, violence, or addiction to drugs or alcohol.

We believe that children can be helped to overcome experiences of abuse and look forward to a happier future, and the People's Postcode Lottery allows everyone to play a part in stopping a bad childhood from lasting a lifetime."

Neil Boyd, the People's Postcode Lottery's managing director for Scotland, said: "CHILDREN 1ST does amazing work throughout Scotland, and we're delighted to be able to donate unrestricted funds for them to invest in areas they feel are most necessary."

How it works

The People's Postcode Lottery is subscription based and players purchase a £2 ticket based on their postcode. Each ticket in the winning postcode receives a share of the £25,000 Street Prize, with a further £5,000 being split between ticket holders in the Postcode Sector.

Every ticket is also entered into the monthly Postcode Belter. Held at the end of every month, the Postcode Belter is a pot of money which increases in line with the growth of the Lottery - players can win thousands of pounds and a brand new Mini.
