Family Group Conferences

We believe that children thrive best when they are cared for by their family, whether by their parents or their wider family.

Across Scotland, we promote family-led decision making and the use of family group conferencing* as a way of bringing extended families together to find solutions for problems affecting the children of the family.

Where it is not possible or desirable for children to live with their parents, family group conferences can identify other family members who can look after the children instead of them being taken into care. Family group conferences can also help children and young people with other issues, such as education, health, misusing alcohol and drugs, getting in trouble with the police or problems at home.

*Family group conferences are also known in Scotland as family group meetings.
