Fraserburgh Families Service
Alcohol and drugs can damage families and leave parents and children feeling cut off and alone.
The Fraserburgh Families Service helps children under five who are affected by parental drug and alcohol use.
Our staff give families practical help in caring for their children and help to build skills to improve parenting. We run sessions for parents and children on a one to one basis and get groups of parents together to look at issues such as routines, sleep, speech and language development and healthy lifestyle choices.
We also run the Mellow Parenting programme which allows parents to explore their relationship with their child and look at how substance misuse impacts on parenting, while children enjoy activities like one-to-one focused sessions, play, infant massage and holiday groups.
Most of the children who come to us don't have a lot of contact with children their own age. We provide creche facilities for our parent groups where the children can learn to socialise, and play sessions in groups to build on these skills. We offer direct support to parents at times of emotional and/or practical need with our family support workers here to listen and assist.
With our encouragement, parents enjoy taking part in their child's welfare and development by discovering their own skills and using materials, books and toys.
As well as spending quality time with their children we also put parents in touch with others who can help, such as local community groups, health care, social work and substance misuse services. And like all CHILDREN 1ST services we help families to think about the best way of giving their child a secure future.
