Midlothian Family Support Service
Children whose parents misuse drugs or alcohol can find themselves near the bottom of their parents' list of priorities.
These children miss out on many of the things most children take for granted. Holidays, trips to the cinema, sitting down to a meal, are normal parts of family life these children may never have experienced.
The Midlothian Family Support Service works with children and young people affected by parental substance misuse. Working closely with the Substance Misuse Service, we identify these children, assess their needs and ensure that they are met through direct work or appropriate referral to agencies in the area.
We work directly with parents to improve the health and wellbeing of their children by establishing routines, making sure they are able to attend school and receive regular health checks. We also help parents to improve their parenting skills and confidence. The service will enable improved joint working between adult and children’s services.
Referrals come through the Substance Misuse Screening Group.
