Killen Family Resource Centre

“There are not enough words in any language that can express our gratitude for everything you have done for our son. We’ve got our happy boy back.” A MumWe believe that childhood abuse should not be allowed to cloud the rest of a child's life.

Our local services help children to heal and their families to recover from abusive experiences. From our Killen Centre in the Black Isle, we work with children and families across the Highlands who have been affected by physical, sexual or emotional abuse.

Children who have been betrayed need to learn to trust again. Our staff use counselling skills, art, play and other forms of creative communication, such as role play, puppets and storytelling to help them understand and cope with their feelings.

We also help children to make sense of their experiences and encourage them to develop trusting relationships with safe boundaries in the future.

It is important that staff and volunteers working with families who have suffered from abuse have a good understanding of how it affects lives. Which is why staff also provide consultancy and training to both voluntary and statutory organisations.

For people who turn to self harm as a way of coping with their trauma, we work with them to develop healthy and safe ways of controlling their feelings.

We can also offer residential stays at Killen Cottage in the grounds of the centre. This gives us the chance to work intensely with a child or young person and their family, and provide a service to more distant areas, including the Isle of Skye.
