Fundraisers at your door
Carefully trained fundraisers are knocking on doors across Scotland to spread the word about Children 1st, and explain the need for vital long-term support to help children and families in Scotland.
Our FAQs below will hopefully answer any questions you may have but please do get in touch if you would like to know more.
You can email us at email@example.com or give us a call on 0141 419 1161 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm).
We would also love to hear from you if you have any feedback. It’s important to us that you have a positive experience if a fundraiser visits you, whether you choose to support Children 1st with a direct debit donation or not.
Thank you for your support, you are helping children to rebuild their lives.
Professional fundraisers visit homes across Scotland to tell people about Children 1st, and how they can help. They ask people to become a supporter and give a regular gift, of an amount they can afford, by monthly Direct Debit.
Door to door fundraising is a safe, secure and proven method of recruiting new, regular supporters, and is cost-effective as we only pay the fundraising organisation (Appco UK Ltd) for new supporters who agree to sign up. It is particularly successful in recruiting supporters who have tended not to respond to other types of fundraising, and want to speak to someone on a one to one basis before they make a donation.
Supporters recruited through door to door fundraising help to generate long term, regular income to help Children 1st reach even more children and families in the future. Door to door fundraising also enables us to raise awareness of Children 1st.
Fundraisers generally work from 9.00am-9.00pm (Monday to Friday) and 10.00am-3.00pm (weekends).
This is because they find these are the times when people are most likely to be home.
Fundraisers will be wearing Children 1st branded t-shirts and jackets, clearly displaying an ID badge which has their name, photo and a contact number you can call to validate their identity. They will also carry a charity branded letter of authorisation to fundraise on behalf of Children 1st.
No, the fundraisers are engaged by a professional fundraising agency called Appco UK Ltd and work on behalf of Children 1st during our door to door fundraising campaign. This means we can use skilled fundraisers in many locations across Scotland, enabling us to speak to more people and ask if they can help raise vital funds to help children who need support.
Yes, in order to meet the high standards we expect, we ensure all fundraisers receive relevant training. Appco UK Ltd provides extensive training to their fundraisers: this includes conduct and compliance training and information on recognising potential signs of vulnerability.
Children 1st also provide fundraisers with training to ensure they are fully aware of how your donations will really make a difference to the lives of children in Scotland.
No, fundraisers visiting your home are not allowed to take cash, cheque or card donations. They are only permitted to ask for regular donations via direct debit. If you would like to make a donation please call 0345 10 80 111 or visit: www.children1st.org.uk/donate
To ensure we comply with your council’s requirements, and for your own peace of mind, Appco UK Ltd will have received the necessary permits (if required) from your local authority.
We understand and appreciate that everyone has their own way they choose to support charities. If you would rather not hear from door to door fundraisers, you can contact your local council to enquire about receiving a “no cold calling” window sticker.
Door to door fundraisers will not knock on any door that clearly displays a sticker which includes one of the following phrases: “no cold calling”, “no cold callers”, “no charities”, “no charity canvassers” or “no charity fundraisers”.
Door to door fundraising is regulated by the Fundraising Regulator who sets and promotes the standards for fundraising practice (‘the code’ and associated rulebooks) in consultation with the public, fundraising stakeholders and legislators. In Scotland, OSCR Scottish Charity Regulator and the Scottish Fundraising Standards Panel promote fundraising standards and deal with fundraising complaints relating to Scottish registered charities.
We really hope you have a positive experience with fundraisers. If this has not been the case please do get in touch as we want to ensure fundraisers maintain the high standards that we expect. Your feedback is very important to us and we are grateful to receive your thoughts so we can ensure fundraisers offer the best experience possible.
If you would like to share your thoughts about any aspect of our fundraising campaigns please call 0345 10 80 111 or email us at: firstname.lastname@example.org
If your complaint relates to the conduct of a door to door fundraiser, it would be helpful to have the following information so your complaint can be investigated:
- date of incident
- location of the incident
- description of the fundraiser(s) - ID badge details and any identifying features
- description of the incident.
These details will then be passed on to the professional fundraising agency, Appco UK Ltd, and every effort will be made to fully investigate the incident through a robust complaints process. We will keep in touch with you to let you know the progress and any outcome.
If you have signed up to a regular Direct Debit donation:
Children 1st will never sell or share your information with third parties who are not acting on our behalf. Appco UK Ltd and Children 1st have measures in place to ensure that the information required to set up a Direct Debit is safe and secure.
We fully comply with the rules and principles set out by GDPR in relation to the collection and processing of all personal data.
We will always ask you for your communication preferences when you agree to support Children 1st. You can change your communication preferences at any time by calling 0345 10 80 111 or by visiting: www.children1st.org.uk/tick-so-we-can-talk
You will immediately receive a welcome pack from the fundraiser, containing further information about Children 1st and the difference your donations will make. If you have provided your telephone number we will try and contact you by phone over the next few days following your conversation with our fundraiser.
Children 1st will then write to you within 14 days to thank you and confirm details of your Direct Debit donations to us, including when the first payment will leave your bank account
