What will I be doing?
Parentline is a lifeline for all families, offering a kind and skilled listening ear for parents and carers across Scotland. We have time for anyone concerned for a child. We build relationships with parents and carers, always keeping children at the centre but being mindful of the challenges to families today. Our team of staff and volunteers are trauma sensitive and knowledgeable in child development and work alongside callers to prevent stress increasing in families.
Helpline volunteers listen to anyone concerned for a child, offer up to date quality information and advice on the things that matter to families and their children, through our website, helpline, and webchat and text chat facilities.
The helpline is open Monday - Friday 9am-9pm and 9am - 12 noon, Saturday and Sunday throughout the year. There are a range of shift options available.
Volunteering for Children 1st’s Parentline is a fantastic opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of children and families across Scotland. Our volunteers learn lifelong skills and gain valuable experience.
A caring, kind, sensitive and non-judgmental response can make a real difference to someone who wants to talk. No previous experience or formal qualifications are necessary, but good language skills are essential to enable you to listen to and support parents and carers who contact the helpline. Trained staff are always on hand to provide support and guidance.
We provide a comprehensive, 51 hour, introductory training course as well as ongoing support and opportunities to develop in the role. We also offer to cover for travel expenses and contributions towards childcare costs.
Due to current circumstances beyond our control we cannot be certain about when our next training course will run, however we hope that it will start in the Autumn. We will post any updates here so please do check back. We are happy to accept applications at this time but we will not be able to conduct interviews until our office reopens.
Training sessions will take place at our office; 83 Whitehouse Loan, Edinburgh, EH9 1AT.
