John McGurk's 560 mile run

Glaswegian John McGurk and his team raised an incredible £46,600 for Children 1st after completing a 560-mile run between the Germany and Glasgow in just five days.

John (55) and his team were delighted at the reaction they had at the finish line of McLennan Arch in Glasgow Green on Monday afternoon.

The welcome party at Glasgow Green included City Council Depute Provost Bailie Margot Clark, Alison Todd, Chief Executive, Children 1st and staff from various Glasgow businesses and sports organisations. But the loudest cheers were from children who helped the kilted ex-pat over the line.

“Seeing the children gave us all a boost in those last few hundred yards,” said John, who’s raised almost 1 million Euros for charities worldwide. “That’s who we were doing this for and I’m so proud of the way people have responded, it’s been great to ‘come home.’”

Alison Todd said: “John has lived, slept and breathed this challenge for the past year. It’s really been an inspirational day with lots of smiling faces. The team have raised a fantastic amount, which will go towards helping the children and families in Scotland that need our services the most. It is a truly incredible effort.”

John’s five-day feat saw him cover four countries and run through Dumfries and Galloway, the Borders, East Lothian, Edinburgh, Clackmannanshire, Stirling, Lanarkshire and Glasgow.

It saw him reconnect with long-lost family, ex-forces buddies and those he had been in a children’s home with as a child.

Just when the team all thought their hard work was done, joker John had a surprise announcement on Monday afternoon,

“They thought they were finished, but I’ve arranged a special wee extra – running another 90 miles to Inverlochy Castle Hotel in Fort William tonight!” said John.

“I want to maximise the time we have in Scotland to raise awareness about the work that Children 1st do. I think the team will love the extra 90 miles – thank goodness I’m quicker than most of them!”
