Katie Morag and the First Minister's Christmas card

This Saturday, the First Minister auctions original artwork for her Christmas card to support Children 1st

Children 1st is one of four charities to benefit from the sale of Mairi Hedderwick’s watercolour of well-known fictional character, Katie Morag, for the First Minister’s Christmas Card.

The original artwork, titled KATIE MORAG AND THE BUTE HOUSE CHRISTMAS PARTY, is Lot 980 and will be sold this Saturday at Great Western Auctions, Glasgow. The picture shows children from around the world being welcomed to the First Minister’s official residence, Bute House in Edinburgh.

Mairi Hedderwick is the creator, author and illustrator of the series of children’s books whose main character is the feisty young Scottish girl, Katie Morag. Mairi was commissioned by the Rt Hon Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s First Minister to create the original artwork which would form the image for the First Minister’s Christmas Card 2015. Since the launch of the Charity Christmas Card initiative in 2007, sales of the artworks and prints have raised more than £168,850 for good causes across Scotland.

The First Minister said: "I was delighted that Mairi Hedderwick was able to create such a wonderful illustration for last year’s Christmas card. Katie Morag’s adventures accompanied by Mairi’s beautiful illustrations are adored by both children and adults right across the world. Christmas is a time for spending time with those that we love, but it is also a time for thinking about those less fortunate than ourselves."

Alison Todd, Children 1st Chief Executive, said: "Children 1st have been delighted to be nominated as a beneficiary from the sale of Mairi Hedderwick’s painting. What could be more fitting to raise vital funds for Scotland’s national children’s charity than through a painting by one of the country’s best loved children’s authors and illustrators.

"The successful bidder will not only gain a unique work of art but the added knowledge that through it, they have helped to protect and support Scotland’s most vulnerable children. Whatever amount it raises on Saturday you cannot put a value on the life changing difference it will make for each and every child that it will help."

The Watercolour, initialled and dated ’15 and measures 15 x 21cm ( 6 x 8 1/4″)
