Charity fundraiser smashes £100,000 target for children and families in Scotland

John McGurk and fellow-fundraisers from his charitable foundation, sportler 4 a childrens world, have completed a monumental 700-mile journey from Germany to Scotland raising valuable funds for children and their families across Scotland.

John McGurk led a team of 16 hardy souls, who ran for four days across Europe raising over £18,750 for Children 1st.  This takes the total raised by John, since he started fundraising for the charity to over £100,000.

Over the years, John, a survivor of childhood abuse, has taken part in countless fundraising feats for Children 1st. He says his latest challenge has been his proudest moment.

John said: “What always lies in my heart is to help children. I know that if children don’t get help quickly, they will suffer the whole of their lives like myself. You have to help them as quickly as possible because if you don’t it’ll never go away and they will always walk two metres behind everyone else when they get older.”

For this latest challenge John and the team from Sportler 4 a Children’s World, set off from the town of Osnabrück in Germany, passing through the Netherlands and England before arriving in Glasgow on Saturday 30th April.

John continued, “It was tough, but it was worth it. I am proud to have finished this challenge and I also want to share a message to all children, that they should never give up.”

Over the years, John has dedicated his life to helping children through countless charity challenges including trekking to the Arctic as part of a team of Children 1st fundraisers.

In addition to his fundraising efforts for children and families in Scotland, John and his charity association in Germany, sportler 4 a childrens world, has raised over £1.5m for children’s charities across the world.

Gary Kernahan, Director of Fundraising at Children 1st, said John is making a huge difference to the lives of children growing up in Scotland. He said: “John’s relentless drive and determination to help children and young people in Scotland is truly incredible and is making such an impact on their lives.

“Heartfelt thanks to John and his team on their efforts for this epic journey on behalf of Children 1st and the children and families we work alongside.”

The money raised by John and his team for Children 1st will be used to support children, young people, and their families in Glasgow and across Scotland. As part of their charitable efforts sportler 4 a childrens world also donated a number of bikes to young people in Glasgow.
