Scots businesses raise £400k to support children and families over six years of Dragons’ Glen challenge
Teams from 28 leading Scottish organisations have taken part in Dragons’ Glen since 2012, raising an amazing total of £403,811 for Children 1st, Scotland’s National Children’s Charity. The 2017/18 challenge raised an impressive £45,434.
Dragons’ Glen is Scotland’s entrepreneurial challenge for businesses. The teams were mentored by our Dragons, foremost Scottish business leaders, including: Ruth Chandler, Chief People Officer at Skyscanner, Rob Letham, Finance Director at People’s Postcode Lottery, Catherine Simpson, Head of Operations at Scottish Equity Partners. Their challenge: create a product and establish a business using £500 seed funding from Children 1st. The goal: generate the most profit for the charity as possible in just five months.
This year, Dragons’ Glen culminated with the Awards Ceremony on 26 April at the Playfair Library, Edinburgh. The guest speakers included: Sandy Macdonald, Head of Sustainability for Standard Life Aberdeen and Children 1st Board Member, and Stuart Ingram, Founder and Director of House of Elrick – as seen on Dragons’ Den.
A team of employees from People’s Postcode Lottery won the competition by raising £11,534. Their recipe book “25 Ways to Fake It” provided a healthier spin on takeaway favourites. Other award winners included: Runner Up – EY, Most Future Promise – Blackadders LLP and Most Innovative – Thorntons Law.
People’s Postcode Lottery team captain Nicola Flockhart said: “It was an amazing achievement by the team and a great collective effort. I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped us over the past 5 months; we couldn’t have done this without you.”
Dragons’ Glen is a unique opportunity for companies to promote staff engagement and development. This year 100% of participants report an improvement in leadership, strategic thinking and communication.
Catherine-Ann Lavery, a Dragons’ Glen participant from EY, said: “It was a once in a lifetime experience; felt great to work as a team and produce a product, and even better to support the charity.”
All funds raised by the teams goes directly to help protect children from abuse and support families across Scotland. Thanks to generous donors and corporate supporters such as the Dragons’ Glen teams, Children 1st is able to support over 10,000 children and families every year.
Barbara Kidd, Director of Fundraising at Children 1st said: “We want to congratulate all the teams for raising such a phenomenal amount for children and families across Scotland. It’s 10 years since players of People’s Postcode Lottery began supporting us to help families keep children safer and enable them to thrive – so it’s particularly special for the staff team from People’s Postcode Lottery to win Dragons' Glen in this anniversary year.“
The competition continues to grow in popularity and takes part in five cities across Scotland: Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness. Children 1st is now accepting entries for the 2018-19 challenge, which starts in October.
